Fabrication and Heat Treatment of Nickel Alloy 601 Inconel 601
Machinability
601 alloy can be machined by all conventional machining techniques. The alloy tends to work-harden during machining.
Forming
The alloy can be readily formed by all conventional methods. It is necessary to clear all traces of lubricant after forming as embrittlement of the alloy may occur at high temperatures.
Welding
Pyromet 601 alloy can be welded using conventional welding techniques such as gas-tungsten arc welding, shielded metal-arc welding and submerged arc welding.
Forging
Forging of Pyromet 601 alloy can be carried out at temperatures from 1038 to 1232°C (1900 to 2250°F).
Hot Working
The alloy is hot worked at temperatures from 871 to 1232°C (1600 to 2250°F).
Cold Working
The alloy can be cold worked using standard tooling.
Annealing
Annealing of Pyromet 601 alloy is performed at 1149°C (2100°F) followed by rapid cooling to avoid thermal cracking.
